Drew Kamphuis – Director and First Aid Instructor

12669492_921311977966589_6441069560640945_n (2)My interest in first aid and life saving started when i was just 8 and I entered a life saving competition at our local swimming pool.  I realised from an early age that I was able to stay calm in stressful situations and excelled in the competition. At secondary school I took an option in First Aid Studies and also learnt first aid for my Duke of Edinburgh Award.  After leaving school, I qualified and worked as a Life Guard around my studies before becoming a Police Officer (TVP). At 23 years of age I  qualified as a Riot Squad Medic. After 5 years in the Police I fancied a change and joined Oxfordshire Fire & Rescue Service as an Operational Fire Fighter.  In 2009 I became the the first and, to date, only female FF in OFRS to qualify and work on the Specialist Rescue Unit based in Kidlington.  After having my 2 beautiful children I was unable to work part time as a FF so moved into the Ambulance Service covering the whole of Oxfordshire. For more than 21 years I’ve loved working in all 3 Emergency Services but especially enjoy working on Emergency Ambulances. We frequently work in partnership with my previous Police and Fire Service colleagues.  It’s always lovely to see them – With regards to our Horse Rider Specific Emergency First Aid Course, I’m also qualified to BHSAI.

Please welcome our youngest member of the First For Safety Team, the extremely lovely Rob Dunn. I’ve had the pleasure of working alongside Rob on many occasions including assisting him when we worked together to save a patient that was choking to death. He’s a wonderful, highly skilled and very compassionate Paramedic. Rob is responsible for delivering courses in the South of the County including: Didcot, Newbury, Wallingford, Benson etc areas.

Here’s what Rob has to say:

“I’ve always been interested in First Aid, after leaving school I completed a 2 year 999 Academy Course learning practical and theoretical skills in how each of the Emergency Services work together. After which I moved to Oxford to study to be a Paramedic with our local Ambulance Service Trust and in partnership with Oxford Brooke’s University. During the two year degree I gained extensive experience of treating patients on the front line.
I now work full time as a qualified Paramedic in Oxfordshire, it’s a fantastically rewarding career. I’m excited to have joined the First For Safety Team.  I’m really enjoying using  my knowledge and experience to teach Paediatric Emergency First Aid. It’s so important that parents have these vital, life saving skills.”
